Julia Alexandrovna Kourotchkina (Russian: Юлия Александровна Курочкина) is a Russian actress, model, and former beauty queen who was crowned Miss Russia 1992 and was later crowned Miss World 1992 in Sun City, South Africa making her the first Russian to be crowned Miss World. She also served as one of the judges for Miss World 2005.


Final Question: How do you answer those critics who regard any beauty pageants as demeaning to women?

She replied: I think Miss World is the contest of the world and this is the contest to help to the whole world. I guess because everybody must love women.

9th Place Miss World 2005 Unnur Birna Vilhjálmsdóttir – Iceland

She was crowned Miss World 2005 on 10 December 2005, in the Beauty Crown Theatre located in the Chinese beach city of Sanya, by the reigning beauty queen, 2004’s Miss Peru Maju Mantilla. She studied anthropology at the University of Iceland and planned to proceed with studies for a lawyer. During the summer of 2005, Unnur Birna did temporary work as a police officer at Keflavík International Airport. She was the chairperson of the college social club and teaches dance. She enjoys acting, singing, all types of dancing, snowboarding, hiking, camping, and horsemanship, and has a special talent for choreography and playing the piano. In 1983, her mother won the Miss Iceland pageant and became a finalist at the Miss World pageant. During the international pageant, her mother was 4 months pregnant which was against the rules of the pageant.

Answer: I have to say the arrival, the people here are amazingly friendly and the scenery is absolutely stunning.

8th Place Miss World 1976 Cindy Breakspeare – Jamaica

Breakspeare was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to a Jamaican father, Louis Breakspeare, who was a British-Jamaican of multiracial ancestry, and a white Canadian mother of British origin, Marguerite Cochrane. She has three brothers and one sister. She was invited to participate in the Miss World competition in 1976 held in London and ended up winning the main crown, making her the second Jamaican woman to win the Miss World title.


During the semi-finalist interview, the host asked her: Apart from yourself, what are the famous sites in Jamaica?

She said: The beaches, we have beautiful mountains and some other things of historic interest.

7th Place Miss World 1995 Jacqueline Aguilera – Venezuela

She participated in Top Model of the World 1995, held in Moscow, Russia, where she became Venezuela’s first titleholder in history. Aguilera competed in 1995 as Miss Nueva Esparta in her country’s national beauty pageant, obtaining the title of Miss World Venezuela and the right to represent her country in Miss World 1995. At the Miss World Pageant on 18 November 1995 in Sun City, South Africa, she won the crown as the 45th Miss World, as well as the Photogenic award.

6th Place Miss World 2004 María Julia Mantilla – Peru

Born in Trujillo, Mantilla is the younger of two daughters of Olmedo Lucio Mantilla Mayer and Elvia Elizabeth García Linares. She was studying to become a high school teacher and planned to start a second degree in Tourism. One of her dreams was to own an online tourism company to promote her native town and country all over the world. Her city, Trujillo, is a mixture of colonial and pre-Columbian architecture. In 2001, Mantilla became the Peruvian national champion of Triathlon and Pentathlon and was elected national athlete of the year. She is a professional dancer in The Marinera, a typical local dance. With a group of ladies, she developed a program in Trujillo to give breakfast to hundreds of children in poor areas. She is a professional dancer. On 4 December 2004, in the Beauty Crown Theatre located in the Chinese beach city of Sanya, she was crowned Miss World 2004 by the winner from the year before, Rosanna Davison of Ireland, becoming the second winner from Peru since Madeline Hartog-Bel in 1967. She has also been crowned Miss World Americas.


Question asked to María: What are you going to miss most about this place when you leave?

She replied: What I am going to miss the most is the people here in Sanya, China. Everyone is very human here because every morning when we wake up, everyone gave us a very nice smile. It is true that I do not speak all the languages but this smile has given us a lot of meaning. Thank you very much, Sanya.

5th Place Miss World 2001 Agbani Darego – Nigeria

Abonnema-native Darego was born in Lagos to a family as the sixth of eight children. As a teenager, Darego longed to be a model, and auditioned for the M-Net Face of Africa modeling competition despite her conservative father’s wishes, but was not chosen as a finalist. Darego attended Federal Government Girls’ College, Abuloma. Upon completing her secondary education she attended the University of Port Harcourt where she studied Computer Science and Mathematics. In 2001, Darego has crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria. Contrary to popular belief, Darego did not replace Valerie Peterside after the latter was dethroned; Peterside had competed in a rival pageant Miss Nigeria. A few months later she was a contestant in Miss Universe and became the first Nigerian to place among the top 10 semi-finalists, finishing seventh overall. She was the only top ten contestants to wear a modest maillot as opposed to a revealing bikini during the swimsuit competition. In November of that year, she became the first Indigenous African to claim the Miss World title (Past winners Penelope Coelen and Anneline Kriel, both of South Africa, are of European descent, and Antigone Costanda, who represented Egypt in 1954 is of Greek heritage). Darego’s victory was widely welcomed in her home country, and her one-year tenure included goodwill trips and scheduled appearances on behalf of the pageant, and an MFR.

4th Place Miss World 2014 Rolene Strauss – South Africa

At age 15, when she won the Elite Model Look South Africa competition in 2007. Strauss later placed in the top 5 of Miss South Africa 2011, where Melinda Bam became the winner. After 3 years, she returned to Miss South 2014 where she ended up becoming the winner of the biggest national pageant in her country. In December 2014, she competed in the Miss World 2014 contest in London, United Kingdom, and during the final question and answer round, Rolene was asked:


Question: Why should you be the next Miss World? to which Rolene responded:

I believe that the story of my book is more meaningful than my cover. Being proudly South African, I have firsthand experience that unity, respect, and forgiveness exist and those are the aspirations of the Miss World Organization. So, it would be amazing to represent an organization that is a beacon of hope to the world.


She was a medical student at the University of the Free State. She was born in Volksrust, South Africa, to Theresa, a nurse, and Hennie Strauss, a doctor. She is a test tube baby. In her own words “I’m a test tube baby and I believe my passion for health was born with me”. Strauss became engaged to D’Niel Strauss (no relation) in December 2014. They were later married on 6 February 2016, at the Laurent Wedding venue in Somerset West. Their first child, a son, was born in January 2017. In February 2020, she gave birth to her second son. Rolene Strauss is a devout Christian.

3rd Place Miss World 2022 Karolina Bielawska – Poland

Karolina is a Polish model, television presenter, and beauty queen who was crowned Miss World 2021. She became the second titleholder from Poland, the first one being Aneta Kręglicka who won the pageant in 1989. She was born in Łódź, Poland. She is a business student with a bachelor’s degree in management and she is studying for her master’s degree. She is the daughter of Agnieszka Zakrzewska-Bielawska, dean of the Faculty of Organization and Management of the Lodz University of Technology, and Łukasz Bielawski, former president of ŁKS Łódź. In 2022, Karolina joined the 70th Anniversary Miss World beauty pageant in Puerto Rico where she won the coveted title beating 96 delegates.

She answered, “Every day we learn something new. We all have unique experiences and all of us can learn something about ourselves. What I’ve discovered is that it costs us so little to enrich the lives of others. This is the cause we can all afford, and believe me, it’s worth its price. If you would like to discover something new, just try to learn to be rich in more empathy, compassion, in gratitude, because we can all do what, as I mentioned before. We can all be great because everyone can serve. And this discovery feels like so simple, but it’s actually [life-willing].”

2nd Place Miss World 2013 Megan Young – Philippines

Megan was born on February 27, 1990, in Alexandria, Virginia to Victoria Talde, from Pandan, Antique, and American Calvin Cole Young III. She studied filmmaking at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. She has worked as an actress with GMA Artist Center and ABS-CBN. In 2013, she joined the Miss World beauty pageant which was held in Bali, Indonesia where she became the first Filipina woman to win the blue Miss World crown. Her youthful and charismatic personality made her a fan favorite among many international pageant fans. She also bagged the Best in Fashion Runway, Miss Sports by Fila, Miss Reducin, Miss Olay, Miss Laguna, Miss Figlia, and Miss Bench Body awards.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Hindi: ऐश्वर्या राय बच्चन) is an Indian actress who is primarily known for her work in Hindi and Tamil films. In 1994, Aishwarya joined the Femina Miss India 1994 beauty pageant where she was the fan favorite for the national pageant title where she became 1st Runner Up to Sushmita Sen who went on to win Miss Universe 1994. In November 1994, Aishwarya competed in the 44th edition of the Miss World pageant, which was held on 19 November 1994 and marked the third consecutive staging of Miss World in Sun City, South Africa. Her remarkable beauty, dazzling style, and contagious personality made her win the second Miss World crown for her country – India.
