Los Angeles, California – Oscars 2023: The 95th Academy Awards was the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 12 March 2023. The awards were honored by films released in 2022. Michelle Yeoh was born in Ipoh, Malaysia to a Malaysian Chinese family. At the age of 20, Her mother entered her into Miss Malaysia World 1983 contest where she ended up winning the main title and she went on to represent Malaysia at the Miss World contest in London, UK. Since childhood, she had an interest in ballet and she later studied at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance in London with a major in ballet however due to a spinal injury she could not continue her career as a ballerina. She finished her Bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts with a minor in drama in 1982.
During the Sunday night event, Michelle Yeoh made Oscars history after becoming the first Asian woman to win the title of Lead Actress. She has had an impressive acting career spanning 39 years since her debut in the 1986 Hong Kong action comedy movie The Owl vs Bombo starring as Miss Yeung. Her most successful stint was in action movies like the 1985 movie Yes Madam and the 2000 movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Including recent movies like Crazy Rich Asians movie with an all-Asian cast. In the 2022 Hollywood movie “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the zany sci-fi adventure centers on Yeoh’s Evelyn Wang, a middle-aged laundromat owner who, while being audited by the IRS, who discovers she has to connect with versions of herself from parallel universes to prevent cataclysmic destruction. Her acting received much positive feedback from the Hollywood panelist and the audience due to her incredible stellar acting skills portraying the role of an immigrant Chinese mother struggling to live in the United States due to language barriers.
Her winning speech during the 95th Academy Awards was:
“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities,” Yeoh said from the stage. “This is proof that dreams do come true. And ladies, don’t let anybody tell you that you are ever past your prime. Never give up.” She dedicated this Oscar award to her mother and all the mothers in the world. “They are really the superheroes, and without them, none of us will be here tonight,” she said. In the history of the Oscars, Michelle is the second POC woman to win the title of Lead Actress after the beautiful Halle Berry who won the same title 21 years ago during the 74th Academy Awards held in 2002. Coincidentally, Halle who was also a former Miss World delegate was present to award the same title to Michelle Yeoh which made this a phenomenal moment. It was a historical moment for the Asian community to witness Michelle Yeoh as the first Asian woman to win the coveted title of Lead Actress and her co-actor Ke Huy Quan winning the Best Supporting Actor. Everything Everywhere All at Once movie won seven awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. Even though tough competitors were vying for the title of Best Actress (Lead Actress) in this year’s 95th Academy Awards, Michelle came across victorious winning her first-ever Oscar.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” premiered nearly a year ago at SXSW, where it became a critical and commercial hit. The film eventually generated more than $100 million globally to become A24’s highest-grossing release of all time.
